In 1913 Emmeline Pankhurst called on women to stand up against oppression, to find their voice, and to find the courage not to be a ‘good girl’.

In a time when getting married meant that women would lose the rights to her income, property, children and even her own body, Pankhurst used this statement to rally women in to action.

“I would rather be a rebel than a slave” is part of her original speech.
